I don’t understand why the circuit needs a “ground”, aside from the negative terminal of the battery.

The ground is the groung of the EC, ( like oscilloscops which have grounds). It is just a reference point for Ec. You can put it anywhere, and EC would neasure everything with respect to thst point.

The ground defines where 0V is. You will understand its purpose if you keep studying electronics just a little.
